Ruth Bader was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933. She received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1954, the same year she married Martin Ginsburg. In 1956 she entered Harvard Law School and was one of about a dozen female law students. She later transferred to Columbia University Law School, where she finished her law degree in 1959. Ginsburg was admitted to the New York Bar in 1959 and the District of Columbia Bar in 1975. She worked as a law clerk from 1959 to 1961, as a law professor at Rutgers University School of Law from 1963 to 1972, and at Columbia University Law School from 1972 to 1980. In 1980 President Jimmy Carter nominated Ginsburg as a judge to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1993 President Bill Clinton nominated her as a justice of the Supreme Court. Ginsburg was sworn in on August 10, 1993.
